From Russia with Love

From Russia with Love
Jun 02, 2014 by August Turak
Several years ago I met Masha in St. Petersburg, Russia while there for my friends Dina and Slava's wedding. She was working the front desk of my hotel, and when I returned the following year we renewed our friendship. But soon she hesitantly told me that she needed a serious operation and despite working two jobs did not have the money to pay for it. Russia offers government funded medical care but the service is so terrible that she was determined to pay cash instead at a private hospital. She told me that she had scraped, saved, and borrowed but was still hundreds of dollars short of what she needed.

Despite the fact that I hardly knew her and we had...

Purity of Purpose

Purity of Purpose
Apr 01, 2014 by August Turak
It's a long story that should be book: A book I'd write if I thought anyone would believe me, but I once met and befriended an American man who had spent 17 years fighting to the death in an Asian underground martial arts circuit.

He happened to be staying at my house for his birthday so I threw a small party for him replete with chocolate cake. Taking a big fork full of cake he grinned and said, "I love chocolate cake. But for 17 years I never had a slice because I was always in training."

"How often did you fight?" I asked.

"Two, maybe three times a year," he replied.

"So do you really think skipping a couple slices of cake made a...

Gone... But Not Forgotten

Gone... But Not Forgotten
Mar 27, 2014 by August Turak
March 18th was my brother Jamie's birthday. 12 years ago he, my brother Dan and my brother Tom were snowmobiling in the Rocky Mountains near Vale when they veered off the trail in whiteout conditions and -40 degree temperatures. One, two, three they all plunged over a 400 foot cliff.

Though seriously injured Dan and Tom managed to dig a snow pit and crawl in, but there was no sign of Jamie. When the rescue workers finally reached them they said they had found Jamie but "he is not breathing." He had plunged head first into a snow drift and unable to free himself Jamie had smothered.

For several years after his death I suffered from what I can only assume was...

How I Won Isabel's Heart

How I Won Isabel's Heart
Mar 13, 2014 by August Turak
"In the Spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love." - Alfred Lord Tennyson I keep telling people that when service and selflessness pays off it pays off in ways you can't anticipate or expect. Well it just happened for me.

A Mexican-American bricklayer repaired a wall for me last weekend. On Sunday he brought along his 5 year-old daughter, Isabel as well as her 8 year-old big brother, Josh. Isabel has long black hair to middle of her back, BIG dark eyes, perfect features, and a beautiful smile that is actually enhanced by the temporary gap where her front teeth used to be.

Not to put too fine a point on it, I was a goner the moment I set eyes...
