The Source of Inspiration: How to Get and Stay Inspired

A consistent complaint in corporate America is that inspirational speeches fail to bring lasting results. Most people believe that inspiration leads to action when usually it is action that leads to inspiration. It is the actions we take even when we don’t feel inspired that eventually bring inspiration in their wake.

Imagine losing weight or getting in shape. Few out of shape people feel inspired to go on a diet or start frequenting the gym. As a matter of fact, one of the symptoms of being out of shape is a listless inability to feel inspired about anything. Rather than inspiration, it is usually the desperation we feel when we jump on the scale that initially sends us to the gym.

... if you long to be an inspired person then start today regardless of how you “feel." Start with little things and rely, not on inspiration, but on the faith that steady, small, incremental steps will bring inspiration in their wake.

Yet if we stick to it something magical begins to happen. We begin to see progress and with each sign of progress we feel inspired. And this inspiration inspires us to even more effort. This becomes a self fulfilling cycle: effort produces results which in turn inspires us to ever more effort. Soon we begin to feel like a “winner” and this inspires us to take the same slow but steady approach to more and more areas of our lives until eventually we have been transformed into an entirely different human being capable of tackling any challenge. We don’t GET inspired we must BECOME inspired people. What initially seemed insurmountable has now become an effortless habit.

The lesson here is that if you long to be an inspired person then start today regardless of how you “feel." Start with little things and rely, not on inspiration, but on the faith that steady, small, incremental steps will bring inspiration in their wake. Finally, the most important thing we can do is surround ourselves with others who want to change. Human beings are social creatures and the single biggest mistake we can make is taking on life changing challenges all by ourselves.

What do I do?

Start with baby steps. Begin by walking around the block each day. Then walk around the block at the same time each day. Keep these promises to yourself and watch yourself transform.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
